Should my speeds be higher?

Hi there

I am currently getting around 1.6mb when testing on speedtest.net, is this the right speed for my stats, or should i be getting better?

Here are my stats
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4224 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 39 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 15 db 23 db

I am 2.47 kilometres from my exchange
Using a Netgear DG834G version 3 wireless router ,

many thanks

  • you should (if on BTs network, which it looks like) have a profile of 3500kbs, so around 3.5mbs would be right.
looking at the stats, though, your 15db attenuation suggests there may be a bit of sync climbing to come this calculator suggests that your sync, for the attn, should be around 7638, leading to a 6500 profile.
going by this then, perhaps something has happened recently forcing a low resync and high snr, check bt' s speedtester results, you may find that you are on a low profile, perhaps 2mbs
You have an ok router, have you recently had any line problems? who is your isp?

Two things affect speedtest.net. Firstly, how fast your ISP is and secondly, how many other things are accessing the internet on your connection at the same time you're running the test. speedtest.net only works out the speed it takes to download a file from it, not how fast your connection is. If you have Windows Update downloading in the background, that can hammer the results for example.
  • true, conor, but it still doesn't explain his low sync and high snr, something is wrong?!

Just done a BT Speed test here is the results

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 4224 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1834 kbps

Is my profile stuck at 2mb, hence the low speeds ?
  • looks like it, contact your ISP, also mention the high SNR and attn of 39db, you should be able to do much better, but the problem appears BTs end, rather than your ISP
