Hi,
I have recently been contemplating getting a sky plus box and taking advantage of skys offer fpr the new sky plus 40hr box for 49.99. However, after doing some digging it would appear that the current sky plus box is not HD. So if like me you were going to go out after xmas and buy yourself a nice new HD T.V then dont bother. There is little point in spending loadsa money on a new T.V that is HD ready when the signal that you will get from sky via the sky plus box will be standard.
Furthermore, as far as I can tell sky only transmit 3 channels (don't know which ones) in HD. So until they up the number of channels and produce a HD box then I would save my money and wait for the prices to come down on all the new fangled technology. So far I have been unable to get any information on any dates when sky will be releasing a box. If you go into any of the high street store they will all start telling you of things in the pipe line but most of this is salesmans flannel (as far as I can tell) so they can sell you expensive T.V for xmas.
All the best

Sky will Broadcast HD signals on Sky movies (And Box office), Sky one, Artsworld and Sky Sports. It doesn't mean that every progam will be HD. The New Digibox will have a hard drive included.

The cost is rumoured to an additional £10 per month on top of you current subscription.
There is no point rushing to buy a HD TV unless you are prepared to pay the extra for the Sky service. Like all modern technology, prices will continue to fall as newer products reach the market.(".)0 -

If you are still considering Sky + it may be worth waiting for the new year - it is rumoured that sky will upgrade boxes for exisiting customers free of charge..0

Sky HD and Telewest HD will both be starting in 2-3 months. Other things to consider are:
1 A lot of new dvd players can 'upscale' pictures from standard dvds. This means there is an increased resolution from a normal dvd. It's not as good as HD DVD or Blu-Ray, but it's a good halfway house for the next year or two.
2 Most HD tellies only have one HDMI socket on it (new Toshibas and Pioneers are the exception with two). Now these sockets are the all singing dancing sockets of the future which everything is going to use. For example, your Sky HD will ideally need one socket. Then if you buy a HD disc player, that will need one, so will an Xbox 360/PS3. As you can see, you'll need lots of sockets. What will you do? You can buy an adaptor for approx £250 for each extra socket (ouch!). You can use extra cables to carry picture and sound (messy and not as good + costs more!) or wait a few more months and I bet everyone will be offering extra socket by the summer!
Saying all that. I'm still sorely tempted to buy one now anyway!0 -

Normally I would not hold by breathe, but I have heard this from a number of different sources, one of which has not let me down yet....But as you say seeing is believing.0 -
Hi thanks guys excellent info. i think i will be able to wait as I still have a 28" T.V which is about 10-15yrs old. But due to old age I require a new T.V for gaming...can't see things aswell as I used to.
