Alba DVDR with Cable (NTL)

Can anyone guide me please.
I bought an Alba DVD recorder in Sainsburys for £69.99 (special price - AlbaDVDR1002). The manual only gives guidance on setting up with sky, not NTL cable so I following the instructions for setting up with TV. I simply removed the 'old' DVD player leaving the scart connected and plugged the scart into the DVDR.
Although the DVD recorder is working it will not recognise cable box. If I press AV on the TV remote I can view cable channels but the volume control does not operate and the picture keeps disappearing.
Should I have used the scart that came with the DVDR (is there a difference)? I have tried placing the old DVD player (unplugged) between the cable box and the DVDR as someone suggested the radio frequency may be the problem with the items too close to eachother but that hasn't worked.
As we do not have an aerial I cannot plug it into any aerial socket (we can only get cable channels).
Could anyone please guide me - do I need to retune the TV for instance?
Please do not use technical terms as I have not got a clue as to what is what cable-wise, I only know what a scart lead is from diagrams.
