Wireless

Are wireless networks really worth the hassle....

Had one for yrs, supplied them for yrs, but they keep loosing connections... All the time...

Has everyone else had this annoying problem...

What kind of router do you have? do have any problems? What kind of pcmcia card do you have....

In general what do you have, or ever had and if so does it work or not?
If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.

    Cheap Origo wireless router, equally cheapo mixture of PCMCIA/USB/PCI cards and a wireless bridge on my wireless network, no problems whatsoever.

    Router = Origo
    PCI card = Ebuyer special unbranded (Safecom or something)
    USB = Kai-Link
    PCMCIA card is a D-Link (only "branded" component on the net)
    Bridge is a LiteOn one I got with a DVD player but used elsewhere.

    Right hodge-podge, and still it all works A-OK.

    Just a thought, have a look at what other devices may be using the same wavelengths in your area as the wireless. AV-senders and cordless phones are common causes of problems.

    I have the reverse problem in my house in that the wireless network stops the videosender from working without interference.....

    I have set up some great wireless networks for some friends which didn't have the option to run wires instead. I always use Netgear routers - the two I have set up were using a Netgear DG834G which is capable of 802.11g. I never had any major problems. The web interface is good as well, with lots of customisable features.

    There can be problems with length of signal and the faster you try to use the wireless at, the less range it can cover. (e.g. 802.11b would cover more than 802.11g)

    Mine is cheap 'n' cheerful but gets heavy use and is rock solid. I use a cheap Actiontec wireless router/modem, an Ebuyer Value (Safecom) PCI card, a Slim Devices wireless Squeezebox and a Fujitsu Seimens Celeron-M wireless laptop. It all works very well.

    As well as wireless phones and AV senders (which use the same frequencies as 802.11 wireless, watch out for microwave ovens and neighbouring wireless networks (and if they are close, your neighbour's microwave, AV sender and/or DECT phones ... ).

  • DECT phones aren't on 2.4Ghz, so they won't cause problems with wireless networks or AV senders.
    Why pay more than you have to?

    My mistake, it's only the US which uses 2.4GHz for DECT.

    I've had a Linksys WRT54G, and still have a Draytek Vigor 2600G, KCorp KLG-575 and Netgear DG834GT.

    The Netgear is the only one of the four that has had problems. I did consider trying to send it back, but have since got it working with certain settings disabled. It's generally a nice unit, although I don't think I'd buy any of Netgear's recent range given the chance.

    The KCorp is the best performer and the cheapest, although hard to come by these days. I've been very chuffed with it, absolute bargain.

    The Draytek is the most solid/stable and feature rich. The Linksys is a good, general all-rounder. There's some great custom firmware techies have written for it which is a bonus.

    My network is solid though, I only get a dropout once in a blue moon. You may have some form of interference. Changing the channel the wireless operates on might be an idea.

    I've just installed a Belkin wirless PCI card and it's providing no end of hassle.

    -about 1:3 times network scan doesn't identify available network
    -Blue screen of death at random moments, due to the card driver
    -connection goes, restart computer and it's back

    I'm really not impressed with it.

    Is it worth me spending some more money and getting something better than a £20 Belkin card?
