Virgin Black AMEX - points related question

Hi,

I have held a black Virgin Atlantic Amex card for a couple of years now, this is the card that has an annual fee. I was thinking of closing the card as I am no longer interested in collecting double Virgin Atlantic airmiles. I called customer services and the gentleman from MBNA told me if I close my account all the airmiles I have built up and credited to my Virgin Atlantic Flying Club membership will be taken back/lost! Does anyone know if this is true? Seems wrong to me.

Thanks

Bernard

  • It's true. The points are a perk of that account. If you close the account, they won't let you keep the points.

Maybe use or convert the points, and then close the account if you like?

    Thanks 'nomoneytoday' for the reply.

I understand using the miles on flights etc, may I ask what you mean by 'convert' the miles?

    Cheers
  • Convert them to something else such as vouchers I think - maybe phone the virgin atlantic number and get some advise from them

I would double check that's the case as I'm sure once miles are awarded they can't be removed.
  • I had a card too and wanted to cancel it.

I checked before I closed the account and, yes you do lose all your points. You really need to plan ahead before closing an account and use them before you close it.

With some cards a proportion of any annual fee paid in advance can be refunded if you cancel the card, and some of the fee returned to you. But this varies so you'd need to ask what their policy is.
