Virus or similar stops anything opening

Hi,

The other day I turned on my computer and it loaded normally. Then, I tried to click on the email outlook and it didn't open. I tried to open internet and other programs and nothing would load. And when I try to shut down nothing happens, so I have to turn the computer off at the wall. I have tried disconnecting the internet cable and turning on the computer, but still nothing loads. I have tried opening card programs but nothing at all loads.

Have I got a virus or something similiar?

Please reply

Jonathan

try one of the free online scanners listed at the top of this section and see if you have anything infecting your PC

you can try Ctrl Alt Del and see if any programs show "not responding" in the list that comes up, if so highlight it and click on End Task.

this may identify the program that is locking it up

are you using windows xp ?

  • Hi, it is my cousins computer which has the problem, so I am unsure. Probably XP.
  • Nothing will load at all, no even internet explorer. I suppose I could tell her to start it in safe mode then try to open internet.

get her to try the ctrl alt del thing and list off whats running on the pc, and to see if theres a program not responding

we may be able to spot something running that should not be there

could try safe mode with Network support but I've got the feeling that if its' a virus then it will still load

  • boot the pc into safe mode then run your virus scanner and any spyware software if you have any.

also get someone else to download a copy of mcafee stinger(fits on a floppy)
you can run this in safe mode but only checks for about 50 virus and trojans

its a possibility its a trojan causing this problem have you downloaded anything unusual, blag software sometimes comes loaded with trojans and some sites also carry it

do you know any pc savvy people? if so the easiest thing to do is remove the hard drive set it up on another pc as a slave drive to theirs and get them to check it out
