prepayment gas meter - help

I just moved into a 3 bedroom house and the landlady insisting a prepayment meter. However, two of us that lived there paid 40 pounds last month but we not really use the heater (at least no everyday and the whole house is always cold). We just used gas for shower and cooking. I know it is normal but I was so shock that when I turn on the heater, it costs us more than 1 pound in just 2 hours. Is that normal??

People will be able to help more if you quote the number of units you are using say per week rather than quoting a monetary amount which is distorted by the amount per unit you pay.

Edit: Ignore the following nonsense about electricity prices
50p per hour is, unfortunately, believable. For a 3kWh fire that corresponds to 16.6p per unit.

Tier 1 can be 22p to 26p on prepayment dropping to 11p to 13p for tier 2. There are typically 1.3 or 1.4 tier 1 units per day.

It might still be an idea to get your gas company to check the meter is set at the right rate.

When I first moved into a 3 bed house with pre payment meters I was putting in £50 a week. I got them to come out and check it and it seems the woman who previously lived in the house had it set high so she could save money for Christmas. How ridiculous is that?
It was brought down to me only paying £20 a week which was still high but not nearly as bad as £50.

I pay £5.50 per week in the summer, gas hob, hot water shower, approx 3.5 cubic ft of gas. I do not have pre pay though, just monthly dd.

Ours is about £5 a week on prepay in the summer with just hot water - no heating, electric cooker.

They often take a weekly "standing charge" which for us is a couple of quid a week, so even when our boiler packed up and no gas at all was being used, the money on the prepay was still going down :(

At the moment, with the heating and hot water on for about 3 hours a day, it's costing us about a couple of quid a day (for a 2 bed flat).

Hmm. I admit there was a big clue in the subject heading of the thread. I'm off to catch up on some sleep.
