Los Angeles --> South America ...Cheapest option?

Hey Guys,
Fly into Los Angeles from the UK on the 3rd Feb. The idea is to hang around California for a while then we are heading to backpack South America for a year, so we are looking to fly hopefully into Brazil in time for the Carnival on the 20th
Just wondering if anyone can advise on the best place to get the ticket LA - Brazil. We are flying into the states on a return (although not using the return back to the UK) so could buy it in the sates but would preferably like to buy it possibly online before. We would also consider flying into anywhere else in South America, if it was cheaper, then traveling onto brazil providing we left the states a little earlier than planned.
Can anyone advise?
