Goto START (Bottom left hand corner)
    Control Panel
    Security Center
Windows Firewall ~ itll tell you what state its in

I would advise a free third party firewall though as the windows one doesnt stop connections OUTWARDS
Sunbelt, Comodo and Zonealarm are the big three

    No problem chatty
If say you had some spyware on your computer (By far the main type of nasty that people seem to get), using only windows firewall it can SEND information from your computer without the firewall doing anything at all to stop it.
All other firewalls (That I know of) will STOP the program sending the info, and ASK if its allowed to (Or maybe stop it entirely if it understands its a nasty)
