Advice needed for wireless!

Hi there

I'm new to the techie board, I have a question if anybody can help...

I have a PC which is connected to a modem, using broadband
I also have a laptop, with my dongle ( i have just been given this by OH)

Is there anyway that I can marry the two up, so I can use the net on the laptop, I do not have a router........?

Any help would be appreicated.

Many Thanks
Gizmo

  • Thanks for that, looks abit long winded for me to try it, I think I may be best with a router...... Does anybody know if these are easy to set up....??

Yes, just a few minutes with a suitable guide. Certainly not more than an hour from first plug in.

Gizmo you dont say who your isp as this will define which type of router you get eg adsl or cable, adsl would be bt, orange, aol, sky and cable would be virgin media, for example if your with virgin media you could ask them if they would send you a free wireless router

If your contract has ended, you can renew it and most internet providors will send you a new one for free.
Its worth contacting your providor to reccomend a router that they support, as if you have any problems they will only provide support to certain routers.
  • Ok Guys.... sorry need abit more help...

I have a PC which is connected to Virgin Media thru a modem- provided by virgin media - webstar
My OH bought me a laptop with a dongle.
My bil has given me a router so that I can use my laptop -
The router is a BT HH version 1.0 I think - it's all white if that helps, I have the disc which I have run, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere with this.

Could it also be the cables going into mu modem from the Hub...

the only cable that I have that fits both boxes is the USB cable....

Sorry if this seems like a really daft question, but I am new to wireless and laptops.....

Any help with this would be really appreciated....

Thanking you from a frustrated Gizmo

You are running cable broadband (ie Virgin) so you need a particular type of router especially for cable connections, it sounds like the one you have been given is an ASDL router. Incidentally, I rang up Virgin today to see if they'd send me a free one - the first person I spoke to said that they were £40, but offered it to me for £20 when I said that I'd heard some people had got them for free. I rang back later and the second person I spoke to offered me one for free without me even having to ask!
