Burn movies to DVD - help!

We have recently bought a camcorder and recorded our wedding on it. We now want to edit the footage and burn some dvd's for the family. My father in law tried to do this using some pre-installed software on his PC. The playback on his PC is fine when we burn to a dvd we don't have any sound, only visual - does anybody know what he's doing wrong?
Secondly, I would like to get some decent editing software for my laptop so we can add music, create a decent dvd chapter menu, overlay text and burn to dvd (the software we have access to at the moment is very basic!) - any recommendations?

I'm surprised that the PC doesn't come with Roxio, PowerDVD or WinDVD installed. Check through the discs that came with the PC to see if there's one for the aforementioned.0

Which software came with the Camcorder and what is the brand name and model?0

it's a sony dcr-sr35e
The only software is a media library to store & file all movies0 -
Doesn't that model come with Picture Motion Browser software?0

As far as I know, the Sony exports the video in MPEG2 format. So you may need a a specialist MPEG 2 editor such as Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD
There is a free trial as well as a usage manual.
Try it and see how you get on.
Otherwise, you would need to convert the file in order to be able to edit the movie.
Someone else may know more about this than myself.0
