I'm using Ubuntu, but the task bar (?) is missing from the bottom of the screen. So each time I minimise a page, it just disappears. Does anyone know how I can get it back?

You need to add a new taskbar then edit its properties so it appears at the bottom. . You then can add a window switcher to it. Right click on the space in the middle of the bar and select "Add to Panel". In the next window, select window switcher or window notification, I forget which but the description of it will tell you.
Alternatively stick it in the existing top taskbar - do the bit about adding the Window switcher but right click in the space in the top taskbar instead.0
