Pregnant and being made redundant

Hey all,

Don't know if anyone can help, but I could really do with a bit of help and advise on what to do.

My wife is 12 weeks pregnant and found out about 5 weeks ago that she will be made redundant in January.

Her workplace is closing down so it isn't discrimination based, everyone (about 10 people i think) are loosing thier jobs.

She hasn't worked there long enough to get redundancy pay, and wont be there long enough for maternity leave/pay to kick in.

We own our house (mortgage obviously) and I and employed full time on about 15k.

Dunno if anyone can help, Im gonna try and get an appointment with citizens advice when I can afford the time off.

Thanks all!

Dan

    Hi Dan,

Your wife will still get maternity pay but this will be stautary and will be worked out on the amount she paid in tax between a certain period. Once the baby is born you will also be receiving child benefit (£18.87 a week) and you may be able to claim working tax/child tax credits.

I know this doesnt seem much but it is better than nothing. CAB will be able to advise what you are entitled to but i would consider calling tax credits to see if you will be entitled to working/child tax

If she has worked for 26 weeks in the 66 weeks going back from the week the baby is due, she will be entitled to claim maternity allowance.

Assuming she will have worked for 26 weeks by the time her redundancy comes round she will be entitled to claim this through the job centre, even if she doesn't find another employer.

It works out around £117 a week for around 39 weeks (do check this as they keep changing it!).

Once baby arrives, you will be able to claim child tax credits and child benefit. £15k is around the cut off for working tax credits so you may or may not get that.

Pop your details in www.entitledto.co.uk and it will give you an idea of what you can claim. If you put a fake DOB in for baby as if (s)he was already here, then it'll tell you what you can claim as parents.
Here I go again on my own....
  • Thanks for your help...

She will be made redundant in January and the baby is not due until May. So that is 16 weeks from redundant to birth, how will that effect the maternity allowance?

She'll get the maternity allowance as long as she has worked for any 26 weeks in the 66 weeks before the baby is due.

  • She will be entitled to maternity allowance from 29th week of pregnancy but claim earlier because there are delays in processing (contact JC+ for claim form). Possibly entitled to contribution based Jobseekers Allowance from date finishes work
