Broken Laptop. No warranty. What can I do?

Hi All,

I bought a Fujitsu Siemens laptop at £600 15 months ago. When I bought it, it came with a 12 month warranty. So unfortunately the warranty has expired.

The problem is my laptop has broken this week. It appears to be a hardware fault with my monitor screen and PC World didn't know how to repair it without returning it to the manufacturer.

I heard that it is possible to claim for a refund (cant remember the name of the legislation) as the products life has not achieved the length that I would expect.

Can anyone tell me if I have any chance of getting a refund from Fujitsu and what I could do to help my cause.

Regards,

Michael

the sale of goods act covers things that are expected to last for a reasonable time can be repaired/replaced, even if the "warranty" has expired....If I've got this slightly wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me ;) but this is the approach I'd take with pcw

This is a known common fault with the laptop you own, send it back to Fujitsu and ask for the problem to be sorted. If you wiggle the screen for a bit it will come back to life.

  • Thanks! Thats what its called !

I actually bought the laptop from a PC store which is no longer exists.

What is the best way I should go about writing to fujitsu ?! Any help is much welcome!!!

The sale of goods act says it has to be of merchantable qulaity and fit for purpose, and it's often mentioned that tv's computers and washing machines have a 6 year warranty due to european law, however I'm not aware that actually ever got incorporated in UK law. I don't even think there is a minimum UK required law, it's what the maker chooses to give you. A lot of items have a 90 day warranty.

In practice you'll find the retailer is not interested after a year and I suspect you'll only get a fix by Fujitsu as a goodwill gesture, however you have a contract with PC world, thats where you bought it NOT Fujistu. Any legal claim would need to be with PCWorld.

If you call them they will help you if you explain to them the problem, it is part of the backlight inverter circut that is faulty, they have help me in the past with the same issue, is it an Amilo by any chance?

  • yeah, it is an Amilo XA.

When I hit the power button it seems like it is loading up, however the screen is completely dead.

    Hopefully, it is fixable...

    Thanks,

    Michael
