Need advice on how/where to buy diamond earrings

My girlfriend is away in Canada just now studying (she's been away since August and isn't back until May). Unfortunately she isn't coming back at Christmas and it's looking like I won't see her until April. For the first time in a while I've got some spare cash so want to send her something really special for Christmas.

Anyway, that's the background! I know that she would love some diamond earrings. However, (like most men) I don't have a clue when it comes to such things, I just know she wouldn't be impressed by them coming in an Argos or HSamuels box.

So, does anyone have any advice on where I should be looking and what I should be looking for? My main fear is getting ripped off, especially when I'll be spending what is a lot of money for me. I don't want a shop assistant to detect my cluelessness and I end up with rubbish quality earrings and several hundred pounds worse off.

Any advice gratefully received!

You need to go to a decent independent jewellery store, which will be happy to give you advice and show you earrings within budget.

No idea where you are but, for example, I'd be happy to recommend Jamieson & Carry in Aberdeen and Cairncross in Perth.

Tiffanys! or for independant jewellers in the south Brighton's lanes are the place to go.
  • I'm in Glasgow. My girlfriend does love Tiffanys, but it seems that they are so much more expensive than everywhere else (like their cheapest diamond studs in silver are about £500).

Have you had a look in the Argyle Arcade, it's a few year's since I've been but it used to be good for jewellers, might be worth a wee look to get some idea's anyway. Remember to check re insurance etc for posting valuables to canada.

You should do a bit of research about the 4 C's Colour, Cut, Clarity, and Carat size on the internet before you go into any shop. With this info you'll have an better understanding of what they are talking about when you go into a shop to purchase. This will also give you the confidence to know what is a reasonable price, go to an independent jewellers who isn't forced to stick to the marked price like high street chains, then negotiate.
  • Apparently HSamuel do a pair of 9ct white gold diamond studs for £14.99.
Read that in the paper this morning I think. Bargain!! Then get her the real deal when she gets back.

Would she not prefer to see you in the flesh?
Depending on the price you were thinking of - maybe an airfare would cost in the same region?
Im thinking as much as I lurrrve diamonds, if Id not seen my man for a few months and not likely too for another few - i know what I would rather have........... :)
