third party giving bank info to another company

I received a letter from my bank stating that a company had tried to withdraw funds from my account.

I have not given this company my bank details, however I believe another company that I sent a cheque to may have passed on the details to them.

No money was taken out, thankfully, but this is very worrying to think anyone could just try and withdraw funds without you knowing.

What legal rights do I have, and what can I do about this situation?

You are covered by several laws, but as the withdrawal failed you haven't lost anything. Instead you can make a complaint under the data protection act.

Why don't you report them to the police for attempted theft?
