As it was necessary to open one in order to fund my three 6-month 7% fixed rate websaver accounts, I'm not ashamed of the £1 that I have in mine. ;)

Savers should walk away from such accounts, swith to better deals. Its the only way the banks will take notice and improve their products. It means we have to be vigilant and be prepared to spend time looking for better rates.

If you bank with them their Guaranteed Saver at 6% fixed, allowing additional deposits AT THE FIXED RATE, looks pretty handy - allows 4 withdrawals in a year.

I opened one of these accounts last year and at that time it paid 5.5 when the base rate was 5.75%.
Now its paying a whole one percent below base rate on the highest tier of savings.
I have now moved all my surplus funds into a fixed rate account paying 6%.
I think its fair to say that by next spring we are looking at 2% gross on this one.
