GCH whole house or part?
Like everyone here, we really need to reduce our gch costs and were wondering which is best - OH reckons that it is best to heat the whole house and leave room doors open whilst disagree.
I was bought up with always having to close doors to " keep the heat in" and my Dad constantly checking temperatures and the thermostat - quite an obsession! Only those rooms that were in use had the rads on and the others always had the doors kept shut.
Whats your opinion?

GCH I think becomes more cost effective the moor rooms you need to heat as the boiler still needs to heat the the pipes carrying the hot water to your rads and switching them off only saves a small % of gas in the boiler but every little helps . Again though insulation plays a big part and each situation varies.
I personally switch room rads off if nobody is in them (basically bedrooms). My downstairs though is on all the time the gch is on as I never know where the kids are going to be but my house will not be the same layout as yours and I think I would turn downstairs rooms off if I could and shut the doors.
Why not try the 2 methods for a few days and check your meter readings remember though if it gets mild it will give you a false reading.Look after the pennies and the pounds will spend themselves0 -
We live in a Victorian terrace and the downstairs extension and upstairs would get damp if not heated. We use every room - spare rooms a thing of the distant past for us. So we have whole house heating with the bedroom TRVs turned down. Doors tend to be open because we have a couple of cats that sleep upstairs and I don't want them trapped in a room and pulling the carpet up to get out. Downstairs radiators on full.0
