Insuring 2 cars

Options
My wife is insured on her Fiesta (which I can't drive at all because I'm too tall!). We have just got a new car (inherited) which we can both drive.

I've been through MS and various other insurers and the cheapest for me with her as a second drive is just shy of £400. Now if it is her with me as a second driver then it will cost £200.

Now the question is, I have been told that the insurance company won't like her being insured as main driver on 2 cars, is this true? And whats the best way to do this??

  • You can only use your no claims bonus (NCB) on one car - is that what you mean?

Whoever has the most NCB should insure the most expensive to insure car as the main driver using their NCB with the spouse as additional driver.

The other should insure the other car as the main driver using their NCB with the spouse as additional driver.
  • Thanks! I think that covers it! I'll have to check how much it would be to cover the the car I don't drive

I'm with Admiral and they gave me the equivalent of full NCB on both of my cars with me as the sole driver.

You have to push them for it but as long as you've got full NCB they will do it.

I think another vital thing to be clear about is who is the main driver on a car? And then note that that person doesn't necessarily have to have it insured in their name. It might or might not make it any cheaper, but even if you are going to be the main driver on the 'new' car, insuring it in your wife's name might save some pennies. But you might then have difficulty getting 'her' no claims bonus applied to that policy because she's already using it on another car. I don't know for certain.

I understand not all companies will allow the main driver to be anyone other than the insurer, but our car has always been insured in my name, DH has never had insurance in his own name, but he is now named as the main driver on our car.

  • Admiral allowed me 3 years no claims on a 2nd car. Main (1st car) was insured with full no claims in my name with wife declared as main driver and 2nd car was also in my name with me as main driver. We could both drive both cars. Hope this helps. As long as you are main driver on the car you drive most i dont see as it matters who is the actual policy holder.
  • I know it's ages since this thread was posted but I would just like to say thanks to all who posted. I am about to get a new car, but would like to keep my old one for a little bit longer (12 years old, 125,000 miles 1.4 Peugeot 106). When I tried my current insurance company, they wanted to charge me £790 to insure it 3rd party only because it was my second car and therefore now had no 'no claims discount' on it. (This is more than double what I was paying with them for fully comprehensive insurance with my full 7 years no claims discount).

When I rang admiral, initially they said that there would be no 'no claims discount' allowed on the peugeot because I was using it on the new car but when I told them that I had heard on the internet that they would sometimes offer the same discount on the second car they agreed straight away to do this. They have therefore quoted me £210 for the peugeot which I thought was quite reasonable.

So I just wanted to say thanks and let others know.

    Thanks !
