Laptop won't recognise the cd/dvd drive

simple as the title really, i have a CD/DVD RW in my laptop, but if i put a cd, dvd or programme disc, noting happens - and when i look for it through explorer it is not listed???

any ideas?

is the drive itself visible in my computer or device manager?
some lappies only have a single screw on the bottom holding the optical drive in so if that has fallen out the drive may become loose.
Remove drive, clean contacts with surgical spirits and cotton bud(whilst machine is switched off)
Can you hear drive spinning up when disk is installed?
To tell if its a software issue insert your windows cd and see if the machine can boot off it other wise its a new drive required i'm afraid. prob bout £30 from ebuyer or such.

Does the cd drive show up in my computer ?

If no it could be common problem where to fix it you need to edit the reg and find the upper and lower filters and delete them then restart the machine this should sort it.

please note if you not sure about editing the reeg dont do it as any mistake can cause a lot of problems.
