Abbey 6mth 3% CB on food & fuel

Just seen this on Telegraph's website
Abbey returns to the credit card cashback

Abbey today launches a credit card which pays 3pc cashback on petrol and supermarket purchases for the first six months.
The maximum amount of cash you can claim back is £75, and supermarkets included in the offer are Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury, Somerfield, Tesco, and Waitrose.
The ''Essentials'' card charges 0pc interest on balance transfers for nine months, and 0pc on purchases for three months. At the end of these introductory periods, the card charges an annual percentage rate of 18.9pc on balance transfers and purchases, and 27.9pc on cash advances.
Michelle Slade of Moneyfacts said: "The rising cost of food and petrol has been hitting customers hard and, unlike some other household expenses, these are not something we can do without. By offering cash back on these essentials, Abbey is refunding part of this increase back to customers."

Well they're very different beasts, so I wouldn't necessarily expect the zero card to go.

  • Thanks for the heads-up, LongTermLurker.

Here's the link for the new Abbey Credit Card:

"We´ll give you 3% cashback on your petrol and supermarket shopping for the first 6 months after you open your account, which will earn you up to £75 back on the things you buy every day."

3% cashback is very tempting, but as it's only on food and fuel and only for 6 months, I think Egg Money's 1% cashback on everything card would be more practical for me.
Well they're very different beasts, so I wouldn't necessarily expect the zero card to go.
I think the Zero card may have been withdrawn. The Zero card link on Abbey's homepage has been replaced by the link for this new cashback card.
  • If you read the fine print, you get a maximum of on £12.50 per month cashback, which isn't very generous. You'll hit your monthly maximum spending only £416 per month in food in fuel.

Hmm, I wonder if Abbey will let me have a 3rd one of their cards to go with their previous cashback card and Zero one.

    Lets find out :-)

How do you find out which petrol stations and supermarkets are included?

I expect it's done on MCC categories same as Halifax' - see here

It's possible Abbey might not use the same list of codes, but I would think they'd be standard.

BTW, remember you can buy more than food in ASDA, Sainsbury's, etc ;)

Billion25 - yes, that is a tight monthly limit. I'm glad I got the Halifax one - just hope they keep it going and don't cut the rate.

Abbey Zero is not there on their homepage anymore! :-(
  • Here's the relevant section of the terms and conditions from when you apply:-

    1. 3% Cashback will be paid on purchases which are identified by Supermarket Merchant Category Codes and Petrol Station Merchant Category Codes.*
    2. These Merchant Category Codes are industry category codes which identify a retailer as a supermarket or petrol station. In certain situations some supermarket or petrol stations may not be identified by these codes and cashback will not apply to those transactions. For specific retailer and transactional details call 0845 7654321.
    3. A maximum £12.50 of cashback can be earned on any combination of supermarket and petrol purchases each month (the period between your monthly statements) for 6 months from the date your account is opened, or any later date which we notify to you in writing. Once you have earned the maximum amount of cashback in a single month, any further purchases that you make during that month will not qualify for cashback.
    4. If we pay you cashback over £12.50 per month, we may subsequently debit your credit card with the overpayment of cashback.
    5. Supermarkets within the Merchant Category Codes include Asda, Co op, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Somerfield, Tesco, Waitrose. Petrol Stations within the Merchant Category Codes include BP, Esso, Shell, Texaco, Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose.
    6. The Cashback award is supplied by Santander Cards Limited and not the Supermarket or Petrol Station. This Cashback does not impact on any other offers supplied by the Supermarket or Petrol Station.
    7. We will pay you any Cashback you have earned by crediting your Abbey credit card every month.
    8. No Cashback will be payable on purchases that you subsequently cancel or return to the supermarket or petrol station for a refund. Where Cashback has already been paid into your account for such purchases, that amount may be deducted from your account.
    9. Cashback will not be awarded if you break any of the terms of your Credit Card Agreement.
*Supermarket Merchant Category Codes are 5411 and 9751. Petrol Station Merchant Category Codes are 5541, 9752, 5542, 5983.
