Cannot update any anti virus software

My husband has an acer aspire one netbook - Windows XP SP3. It came with a trial version of Macafee installed but I noticed the antivirus was out of date. Tried to update but couldn't connect to the server. Also noticed windows auto update was switched off. Tried to switch on & check for updates but could not connect to the updates page. Started to get a bit suspicious & installed SAS which I use on our main computer - but again I could not update the spyware definitions. I cannot seem to connect to any pages relating to antispyware - not even online scanners. So currently I have no up to date antispyware/antivirus software......any ideas

Download, install, update and run Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. Run a Quick Scan and then Remove Selected.

Thanks Donnie - that did the trick:T I couldn't update at first but still did a quick scan and it found 27 trojan problems. Deleted these and restarted - I could then update and a rescan found another 7 - got rid of these and now everything is up to date

I knew it would be a trojan....I just couldn't find the blighter

Because some are prevented from reaching the download link in the normal way. I've provided a direct download.
