  • I take home £150 a week, he takes home £180-200.
I was on £250 take home, he was on £570 take home week.
    We are both late 30s.

You can claim HB and elect to have it paid into your own bank account and not direct to your landlord. Do you have to pay for any childcare? If so, it's taken into account when they work out your HB entitlement. You may also get help with your Council Tax.

Ok, computer crashed, but I've redone the sums.

    rent 625
    tax 144
    elec 50
    gas 20
    sew 44
    car 176
    tv 10
    tel 10
    net 20
    mob 65
    food 200
    car ins 120
    petro 100
    tax 15

    1599

Bottom line is that you take home £960 per month and outgoings are £1600.

£411 of the outgoings are car related.

    In terms of action:
-do away with the mobile phones
-you pay £1440 per year on insurace. How much of that is the insurance and how much is interest on payments?
-if you could do away with the car, do away with mobiles, reduce food costs and maybe also rent a cheaper place then I think you could make the numbers balance up.
    Drastic action, I agree.

i would like to know how anyone could suggest a family could live on less than £50 a week for food, beans on toast for every meal would not do anyone any good

£50 per wekk, yes not much at all, I wasn't paying attention properly.
I don't see how else to cut back, someone else with better utility prices might be able to comment.
Cheaper rental property would be the next thing to consider.

Pop across to the Old Style board. They will help you lower your food bills. They are brilliant at spinning straw into gold. Its not just a matter of beans on toast for every meal.

We are doing the grocery challenge on the money saving old style thread,my budget is £50.00 for 5 adults and 3 dogs and the cat,we eat very healthy meals every day, lots of veg,and we only have baked beans once aweek.
With a bit of planning it is possible to cut right back on food.
