Sorry, yep, it`s me again. OK, I have the new sata hard drive and some extra cabling to convert it from ide. Their is a sata socket on the mother board according to the spec. Do I need to do anything in the bios I wonder? Had a quick peek but I see nothing regarding sata there. All ideas please!

  • Hi
Confused do you have a sata ide or pata ide drive??
I would get a pata ide drive if that's what you want. No "extra" cables required!

If you converted the cable connection to a pata ide thats what it is, not serial.

    Motherboard make and model?

I can't seem to find it on the AOpen site http://global.aopen.com/

But found the spec here: http://www.firingsquad.com/hw/1321/AOpen_MK77M-8XN/

[STRIKE] It appears just to be IDE, with no SATA connections - and if this is correct you'll need to use an IDE (PATA) hard drive.[/STRIKE]

Edited to add it does have SATA after all!

I agree with the above from TS, better to have the correct type of drive rather than converting it.

isofa, you need some new specs! The motherboard you linked to does indeed have SATA connections.

Pobby, going by your last post, you're installing it as a second drive? You'll need to enable SATA from your bios, if it isn't enabled by default, and install your motherboard's SATA drivers.

No in fact the new drive will be the only drive as the existing one is faulty. Thanks for your interest.

In that case you'll need to place your SATA drivers on a floppy disc before install and hit F6 when it tells you during the install process, as XP will not pick up the drive on install.

If you don't have a floppy drive, then you can slipstream your SATA drivers onto a copy of your original XP CD. The easiest way to do this is to use a program like nlite which will do most of the work for you. Read through the guides on their website if you need some advice.

Of, if you don't want the hassle, hook it up to the IDE connector.

So it`s that easy. I can just hook it up to the ide connector and I need do nothing else?

If you've got an IDE (pata) to sata converter, then you can expect to get poorer performance with that than by connecting it to the sata socket on the motherboard.

As SJames says, you may need to do some work to get the drivers in place, though if you're lucky your BIOS will have a sata auto-detect routine built in, in which case it will just work.

LOL so it does! I was searching the description for a quick SATA and they had of course written it out in full "Serial ATA Channel x 2", typical!!

OP - plug it in, see if it is detected, if not, boot into the BIOS and check the settings.
