How about you start by looking at the 84 page dedicated New York thread at the top of this page? You could then do a forum search for Los Angeles.

  • just came home from nyc. Get yourself a 7 day unlimited pass metrocard, available from vending machines or kiosks in subway. Go to the top of the rockerfellar centre at sunset, spectacular views(better than the esb and you can stay up there as long as you want).Put your digital camera on manual and play with the iso settings to you get the results you want.Shopping, catch the bus from the port authorities bus terminal to woodbury common(a huge retail outlet centre with discount vouchers available on arrival from the tower)allow a full day for this ,the journey only takes 1 hour but the shops take hours and should fulfill your shopping needs for your entire break,(taking a empty suitcase is advisable!).

Take the circleline ferry tour from pier 16 south sea port, the ferry is called the zephyr and the trip commentator ,(Tim),is excellent very informative and amusing.(make sure you get a good speck but also be near one of the many bose speakers to hear the commentary. you will love nyc, very clean and safe. Central Park is lovely for a break from the hectic NY pace. Empire State building is pretty cool too but I do recommend one of those Pass (I think you can get one from Planet Hollywood @ Time Square) that allows you to skip part of the queue.

For cheap clothes (Polo socks, CK undies, Nike stuff etc, that kinda thing), Century 21 is great and good fun. It's close to the Ground Zero so we went to one of the close-by building by the water where there was a little exibition of the twin towers (tells you the history, shows you the new design etc) then have a cup of coffee outside by the water then walk to the site. Then Century 21 to cheer you up!

LA is amazing too. I think this is how I spent one of the afternoon I was there:

Union station then Latin Quarter/Mexican market (right next to it, lot of history and stalls for souvenirs) then walked to China town for something to eat.

We went to Universal Studio, I think it's an experience and perhaps younger people may enjoy it more - it's no Alton Towers that's for sure. Few good bits though but queues could be long unless you pay extra to skip queues.

Really you need a car to fully enjoy LA. If you are going to hire one, do drive long the coast as there are some nice beaches (mentioned above) but we particularly loved Manhattan Beach and there is a lovely seafood restaurant that served amazing food. It's a bit like Brighton.

I wonder how many people actually mind people asking for recommendations 'repeatedly'. I think it's half the fun to recommend something for others' forthcoming trips when they come across thread like this - I ain't gonna search for thread and give help, am I!?

Yes, people should do a quick search first but hey if serach is the only thing you should do on here, we may as well either have a huge thread or close this board and have a link to tripadvisor.

I wasn't suggesting that searching is the only thing people should do on here but it seems rather 'short-sighted' (both meanings of the word) to ask about what to do in New York when there is quite clearly a huge sticky thread at the top of this page which contains masses of useful information.

    I KNEW you would reply!

But I know what you mean by searching first though. Just thought sometimes it's more fun to be able to answer people's questions and to have the opportunity of adding extra/up-to-date info, that's all.

Beside, sometimes I find sticky threads are pages and pages long and some even started so long ago most info doesn't even apply!

Again, I do appreciate what you meant by searching and amount to threads it can potentially reduce.
