Ipod Classic maybe?

My son wants a I-pod for his birthday/Xmas and wants one that has at least 20Gb for his songs etc.
I have looked at the Apple site and see that the Classic seeems to suit his needs although it will mean that the smallest size available wll be 80Gb.
Can anyone confirm that the Classic is good, or is there an alternative? It does seem strange that I will need to buy an 80 Gb, when a 40Gb or 60Gb would have sufficed, if available.
The cheapest price appears to be the Pixmania item at http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/597607/art/apple/ipod-classic-80-gb-silver.html plus Quidco off, but does anyone know anywhere cheaper
All help and advice greatly appreciated.

Just noticed that they (Pixmania) have a 80Gb at £134 http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1716106/art/apple/ipod-classic-80-gb-in-bla.html although this does say 6th Generation.
What is the difference between this one and a 6th Generation, will it be any different for my son?

There used to be various hard drive "classic" versions, but Apple revised the range a few weeks ago, and now they only have the larger model iPod Classic which as a 120Gb hard drive. Mainly because "solid state" memory has dropped in price so they can make smaller iPods with "flash" memory up to 32Gb in the range.
20Gb is quite a lot of storage, if he just wants music with a small device personally I'd go for the iPod Nano with 16Gb (it also comes in 8Gb if you want less capacity). These smaller iPods use solid state memory, not hard-drives, so use less power and are much thinner that the classics, they are incredibly tiny and thin.
For better capacity and the ultimate in features, the iPod Touch is hard to beat, this comes in 8, 16 or 32Gb capacities, again solid state memory, no hard drive. The screen and interface is gorgeous and it has WiFi for internet access and a host of other features.
All you need to know at Apple here: http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/
I'd go and try them out in an Apple Store, John Lewis or other dealer.0 -
i would say the price difference between a 20gb and a 120gb drive is now fairly neglegable, so why build something that is only going to be a tenner cheaper?
I have both an ipod touch and a classic. In fairness 20gb would become quite limiting, especially if you start putting on movie clips etc.
A 32GB touch is still quite expensive, but it definitely is a nicer machine than a classic.0 -
Thanks for the great advice guys, much appreciated.
I think the Ipod Touch is just too much for us to afford, although it does look great.
The Ipod Nano may just not hold enough although I will check with my son, but the music and podcasts (he says) take up to 20Gb.
The 'new' Classic is a touch too much storage as 120Gb would be just too much and not required. I would have preferred the 60Gb ipod but believed that the 80Gb was the smallest.
Choices, choices...:rolleyes:0 -
Why is the 120GB Classic too much storage? It doesn't matter that it'll probably go mostly unused. The fact is that you get several times more storage for an extra few quid so it makes sense. He might decide he wants to put movies on his iPod which will eat that 120GB up.0

Remember that you can make the most of a smaller iPod, because everytime you sync with the Mac or PC desktop, you can change what is copied over to the iPod, so you don't have to have all your music, podcasts and movies on it at once. We've got a tiny Shuffle and larger Nano, and regularly change what is sync'd to it, the Nano stores thousands of tracks at the highest quality, so for a weeks holiday etc, you'll never listen to a 10th of the stuff on it!
You might be able to find the older models now cheaper, being sold off by Apple dealers or even some bargains from the Apple refurb store (go to the online Apple store and search for "refurb"). Also try a Google Products Search for prices. There is always eBay, but be careful you buy the genuine article.
The Classic today, is bulky when compared with the Nano's and Touch, and it's clear Apple are phasing it out slowly, as in their new line up there is only one model. However if you have lots of movies and photos, and also want to backup files from your computer on it, then I can see the advantage. But it's not for me.0 -
Conor,
Thanks but the extra storage is always useful but £40 to me is not just a little extra, it is trying to match the Gb against £ that makes my decision. I can just about afford the 80Gb but another £40 is too much unless you can find a 120Gb for aunder £150 max:cool:
isofa,
Great and practical advice. I shall have a word with my sonand maybe sugget buying a 16Gb Nano and using it with different libraries as his modd takes him.
Thanks guys and gals, all good advice as always.0 -
Ah, fair enough. I'd not checked the prices TBH and was trying to decipher from your post what the difference was. I know that sometimes when they bring out a newer one, they give a whacking increase in capacity for a few quid.loonygooner wrote: »Conor,

80GB is more than sufficient. I have 1390 songs which equates to 4.1 days constant listening which was ripped at very high quality from my lifes collection of CD albums (higher the quality, the larger the filesize) and that takes up just over 8GB. I hope that gives you some idea...0 -

No problems Conor, all with good intentions.
I think I need to hand over all the relevant info to my son and let him make his own decision.
I hope he goes for the Nano though:rolleyes:0 -
I love my 80gb Ipod Classic. I've had it for over a year, it's got about 55gb of content on there (roughlly 25gb of music, 30gb of video.).
I use it all day... on my 1hr commute, i watch TV downloaded onto it. At work, i listen to music.. when i get home, i plug it into it's dock next to my hifi and listen to music through that.
If it had less space it would be useless to me. The size is great for what i need - i don't jog, so don't need solid state memory or a small device. I have a nice leather holder for it so it looks good and is well protected on my way to work. If it was smaller i'd find it too fiddly.
I say - give him a budget, let him decide.
btw, if he gets one from the following list, he can watch BBC iplayer videos on it : http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/3734-bbc-iplayer-comes-to-portable-devices-with-windows-drm.html
Edit: better list here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/where_to_get_iplayer
How about a Creative Zen ? It's an alternative to a Nano that's much better value http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/4986102/Creative-Zen-32GB-MP3-Player/Product.html0 -
Thanks ringo,
Again, great advice and as you said, let him decide:eek: .
Never thought about putting i-player on it so that is new and welcome advice.
Decisions decisions although if he doesn't clean his room then
