I'm have started to learn welsh and I find the spelling soo much easier than english, I rarely make spelling mistakes in welsh (which is just as well as spell checker doesn't work) where I struggle with a lot of english words spelling a lot of them backwards for example. I can only think it is because welsh is phonetic whereas as english isn't and has lots of funny rules and then exceptions to those rules. I find them really confusing.
I have dyslexia, so get used to my spelling and grammar :)

'Repeatedly late for work' because of a Welsh sign? Don't you think it would have made more sense for you to just learn some Welsh? or at least learn the Welsh word for delay??? If you've lived here all your life i find it very unbelievable that you still don't understand the word "Oedi".

You want me to spend money and time learning a language that will give me absolutely NO benefits whatsoever?? No thanks, i'd rather spend my time learning a language I can benefit from!

If learning some very basic Welsh will stop you being late for work then you will benefit.

    Learn some logic, too.

I call bulls**t on him being repeatedly late for work anyhow, I have never seen a Welsh only road sign in my years of driving.

I do think it's a bit of an offense to take such a negative stand towards the native language of the country you live in.

But, alright, then maybe the entire Europe should get rid of their own all different languages and all speak only French? Or German? Or.... Urdu?
It would indeed be practical. Not to mention all the expenses saved!
    But what would we loose...

Welch is your native language. The English language was forced on the Welch people. It's impressive how the Welch have manged to keep the language in spite of all efforts to wipe it out.

There are ONLY TWO monolingual countries in Europe and that's Iceland (0,25 million inhabitants) and Portugal (4 millions). In England, they have Cornish, too.
My own country, Norway, with it's 5 mil. inhabitants have 3 official languages, Norwegian nynorsk, Norwegian bokmål and Sami. We also have two more dying Sami languages and also Finnish. Some places have road signs in 3 languages: Norwegian, Sami and Finnish. It would in my opinion be disrespectful to have road signs in only Norwegian.

I myself am a Norwegian, of Norwegian bloodline (i.e. not a Lapplander nor Finnish).

Talking about the cost of a bilingual nation? The costs must be measured by the costs of loosing a language - are you willing to risk that?
Tons of paper print in both languages IS a problem - but, still a problem if Welch speakers were forced to read English only. Electronic paper free distribution may change that.

I'm at university in a very Welsh town and everything here is bilingual - Every email I get from the uni is half English half Welsh.

Did put my back up a little when I got one in complete Welsh and then five minutes later another that said 'Sorry, that was meant to be sent to the Welsh half of the class only' - Call me paranoid but I now NEED to know what that email said! :p

I know this thread is old with a dew recent additions. But that is one of the funniest comments i have read for a long time, being repeatedly late for work because a sign was in welsh. Could understand if it was a one of, but repeatedly. Anyone with half a brain cell would try and find out what the sign said if it kept making them late. Classic stupidity at it's best.
