I have allways used the last free version of Mailwasher

Alows multiple email accounts and sits between Thunderbird and your ISps servers. All mail can be read and deleted on the server so no virus etc gets to your PC. Takes a while for it to learn your definition of spam but works well for me .

Thunderbird has an inbuilt filter. You need to train it initially by telling it what is spam and what is not spam. It gets pretty good after a while.0

Have a look at K9 (http://keir.net/k9.html)
It's not specifically for Thunderbird, and it take a little (a very little) more effort to install it than a 'one click' solution. It is the best spam filter I've tried though.0
