suspicious eon marketing

Options
Hello. I received a mailshot from eon yesterday, addressed to "The Occupier". On the front, it states "We supply your electricity and gas, and you're now responsible for what's used at your new home. We don't want to charge you for electricity and gas that the previous occupiers used, so please call us with your meter readings as soon as you can." The inside of the mailshot repeats that text, along with some other marketing spiel and glossy pictures. It is not a letter.

Firstly, I am not and eon customer (although I guess I should check that I have not been switched without my knowledge). Secondly, I moved in to my home 10 months ago. Thirdly, I do not have gas. This, therefore, appears to be to me a fraudulent piece of marketing designed to confuse people into switching to e-on. Is this legal? Is it worth complaining to OfGem? Has anyone else received this?

Thanks.

-D.

  • No it is a valid mailshot because they do genuinely think they provide energy to the property but their records have no occupier name. It could be that the details are crossed with someone elses but I suggest you call them to clear it up - it's the first step in trying to get some accounts updated and is better sorted now.
