After an update of SP1 (Vista) on an 18 month old Dell C521 I get this:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000C1F5 (0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000)
Same problem as: http://thevistaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=32596
I have tried this fix: http://www.delmartian.com/TheGalacticToilet/2008/03/31/WorkaroundForSTOP0x0000C1F50xC1F5C1F5BSODCLFSSYSKB946084.aspx
but it just wont boot, not in safe mode, not from the recovery partition, not from CDROM. I am well and truley stumped.
The only way it will work is by actually disconnecting the hard drive and then booting from the Vista re-installtion CD. However it then can;t 'see' the hard drive once it is reconected to re-install the OS. Additionlly, it requests for drivers, and although I have the CD it wont seem to 'find' them, and I can't get any further
. If anyone can help, I will bow to your superior tech knowledge!

Evening!!!
I had this problem the other week, oddly enough on a Dell laptop, and was amazed that microsofts answer to a problem they know about is to format the hard drive and then re-install the OS, thus wiping everything and starting again.
I found a bit of a work around on google which involves downloading a linux recovery disk and messing about with that and you can then re-install/re-pair the OS.
all the details you need are here:

hope this helps it will take a while, and of course you will need another computer to download the recovery cd.
I find it astonishing that this is a known problem with vista and as such there is no microsoft cure.
all the best
