Games serial numbers

I have to put a new hard drive in tomorrow. Somebody has games installed and doesn`t have their serial numbers. I know that magic jelly bean can retrieve Windows serial numbers but I guess that their is no software to find out what the serials are for the games to be reinstalled on the new drive.

  • you should find the serials on the boxes containing the game disks :)

You could back up the hd as a image and then create a partition with specialist software like Acronis to create a partition with that data on, but you may have problems unless you use that partition for the OS due to registry entries for programs/games

Or if it currently only has a single partition, you could backup that with something like Acronis or the cheaper (free!) Clonezilla, restore it on the new HDD and then use a partition editor to "grow" the partition to fill the whole disk.

GPARTED will do this, but only with certain file systems. IIRC it will work with NTFS, but not with some of the more sophisticated journalling file systems.

I would have thought that the serial numbers for most, if not all games, would be stored in the registry. Haven't heard of any software that will recover them for you, but it shouldn't be difficult to locate them in the registry, I'm sure if you Google hard enough, you'll find a guide.

That said, creating a cloned image of your existing HDD would be more convenient.
  • The serial numbers listed on the front USB hub, next to the HDMI port, and under system information of my xbox 360 do not match. I bought the system used off eBay, but I checked the seal underneath the faceplate and it has not been broken. So I do not believe the unit has been tampered with or that this could be caused by a case swap.
