Cheap Windows XP?

I want to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP. What's the cheapest way of doing this? I've seen XP on ebay, but don't know how I could tell if it was legit or not. Are there any websites (other than microsoft's own) that sell xp?
Thanks

  • As long as your computer is capable, see above post, then any on line retailer will sell you XP. I in the past have used https://www.aria.co.uk they are selling XP Home oem for about £62.

Providing you buy a qualifying piece of hardware. OEM software can't be bought on its own. However, something as trivial as a mouse or floppy disk drive would probably count. You should also remember that OEM software cannot be used to upgrade an existing installation, so you will need to backup everything you want to keep before installing XP. Failing that, look for the upgrade edition of XP, which should be about the same cost.

Personally, I would recommend the Media Centre Edition of Windows, as it offers more then XP Home edition but costs about the same.

 I don't think there is a difference.

It may be smaller, have a micro ATX mobo, or quieter but it's still the same as a normal PC.

Media Centre will run on any type of PC. It's Windows XP with a slight bias towards multimedia and use on a TV, but fundamentally it is still Windows XP.
