Haggle for cheaper Sky replacement box

Having spent over 45 minutes on the phone going through the various Sky (don't we love to hate them on 0870  ) departments, I finally got a good deal!

Basically, my old Sky Plus box is dying, and I wanted a new one to replace it. Dish working, box easy to plug in (only a few scart leads after all) and so thought "easy ... get new box sent to me from Sky".

Not so easy! Kept being told that I had to have a whole new system, then that I could have a new box, but it would cost £199 + £60 fitting.

Did the old Customer Disconnections dept, and on the second occassion, having found myself unexplainably back in the "48 minutes on hold" message as they love our business so much and finally it went down to only £99 which includes the little chap coming to fit it!!

So keep at it, don't listen to the first Sky option, and yet again another case of the price going down the more you moan!!!

About this timr last year i knackered my old Sky+ box. Decorated lounge (i.e. stripped wallpaper replastered etc etc) and the box got damaged by all the dust and moisture and wouldn't access hard drive

Phoned sky and basically said that if they wanted to charge me for a new sky+ i'd cancel my subscription (long standing customer) as that would save mr £500 a year and get a freeview box.

Eventually a nice man bought round a brand spanking newbox and fitted it all for NO charge !!!

    Sorted

I'm currently on my fourth Sky replacement box. I've never paid a penny for any of them. Each time the old one went wrong, I told them I would rather cancel than pay them extra just to fix their own equipment.

If you sound serious enough about cancelling, they will waive the charges and replace the box for free. It makes good sense to them. For the sake of the callout fee for an engineer, they would risk losing over £500 per year. Each time the box is changed, it also comes with a free 3 month warranty as well (not that this bothers me I'll do the same again if this current one goes wrong).

They always try to offer a 'reduced' replacement fee at first, but if you stick to your guns and insist you would rather cancel than pay the charge, they will eventually offer the callout for nothing (the trick is to sound deadly serious about cancelling your contract if they insist on the charge).
