Debit card lets me withdraw more than i have???

What do people think of this?
As I understood things, a debit card only allows you to spend what you actually have in the account. Luckily I don’t bother with credit cards so a debit card seemed ideal for me.
At one stage I had £45 in this account and without realising withdrew £50. I realised my mistake and recredited the money through my linked internet account the following day. I’ve now been hit with a charge of £21 based on being in debt to the tune of £5 for one day.
Now this I accept since it was my fault for withdrawing too much money (albeit unintentionally) however I chose this card on the understanding that I could only spend what I had in the account at any time. Is it normal for debit cards to allow you to withdraw (from a cash machine) more money than you have at the time? I though this wouldn’t be allowed?

Yes.
Banks have a tiny acceptable limit, usually upto £10 (it is £10 with HSBC, however they won't charge you if its under £10) or around that.
If its your first time you can go into the branch, explain it was a total mistake and you thought the debit card wouldn't let you take money out you didn't have and ask for it to be paid back. They will likely do this if its first offence. But they won't do it for future.0 -
