Thank you for all the replies, this morning another fault appeared - windows couldn't load due to missing file, but when I clicked on 'r', it loaded up ok. I am now scared to ever turn it off! To be honest, given the age and low spec of the pc (512mb, pentium 4 processor, and dare I mention the brand -Tiny!), I am reluctant to spend money on it. Think I will drive it til it stops, in the meantime look out for a good deal on a new one.
One more question - if the pc dies before I manage to get a new one, will the existing external hard drive be enough to make sure I don't lose all the important things like photos, itunes music, emails, a few documents? It is a western Digital with plenty of space on it and has been doing a regular weekly incremental backup using Nero. I really do appreciate all the advice so far.
  • If it's Tiny, take it out the back, strap some C4 to it and blow it up.

Tiny? And still going after 6 or 7 years? Think yourself lucky, start surfing for a replacement NOW, don't wait until it completely dies.As long as your external drive contains all the files you want to keep then you're OK.Get the best spec you can afford. Don't be swayed by all the fancy software they throw in as most of it can & should be replaced with free stuff.

My PC is still running after 12 years and in all that time it has only had 2 new power supply units, 2 new motherboards, one new case, memory relaced 3 times, 2 new sound cards and one new graphics card. Good as new ;)

Well it was my dad who taught me to mend things, he has had the same wood axe since he was a boy, just replace the head or the shaft as they get worn or split and a new wedge if it gets loose and it will last you a lifetime :)

  • Sound advice, until the cost of replacing components in an old PC outweighs the costs of getting a new one. Not quite the same as an axe! :)

I just had to join the forum to reply to this!

Isn't this the same as Trigger's broom in Only Fools: "It's the same broom I've had for years. Only replaced the head & the handle!" :rotfl:
