Glasgow - Bristol by train

Hi Guys,

I'm hoping someone can help. I'm looking for fares, return from Glasgow to Bristol on the train, am pretty flexible on dates but it must be leaving Glasgow on a Saturday and returning on a Sunday. I've done some searches and followed some tips but the cheapest fares I'm coming up with are around £400 for 2 people!!! :eek: Surely there must be cheaper? I'm not too good at these things so if someone has any experience of this journey or a better way to be looking, I would be grateful for any advice.

  • This is a route where split tickets and advance buying is a must, use this website to see when the advance singles are released;

    http://www.ticketalert.thetrainline.com/

    you can split tickets at the following;
    Bristol Temple Meads to Birmingham NS
    Birmingham NS to Glasgow Central

    or

    Bristol Temple Meads to Crewe via Newport (south wales)
    Crewe to Glasgow Central

    You can also try Manchester Piccadilly and Wolverhampton

    Just remember your getting 2 lots of tickets and a change of train and give yourself plenty of time to change train

    According to the trainline.com, you can leave Glasgow at 11:40 on Saturday 15th November, getting to Bristol TM at 19:18, return next day leave at 13:30 getting in at 21:07 on an off peak return for £131 each. Does that help?

    Don't do Crewe via Newport on a Sunday its horrible! Bear in mind if you split tickets its best to be on a train that actually stops where you are splitting otherwise its a bit suspicious!

    Hey WestonDave, thanks but thats still a bit too pricey - you can fly for less than that! (unfortunately my friend can't fly so that's a no go)

    I really had no idea the train is more expensive than flying!

    Yes Crewe Via Newport might be horrible but it will save money, I don't think you can get a direct train so it would be a change of train in accordance with the Advance Ticket and you can get an Advance Ticket from Bristol to Birmingham for £6.50 and an Advance Ticket from Birmingham for £10.50, Total £17 per person one way.

    It's more than suspicious - it could be very expensive ! Splitting is quite legitimate, but the train must stop at the splitting station. If not, you could be charged the full single fare.
  • have you considered flying to southampton then getting the train, there is a direct one from southampton to bristol

    just a thought, my sister uses the southampton - scotland route and its usually ycheaper than driving or training
  • The OP has to change trains at Birmingham NS because one train terminates there and the next train starts from there So there no problem with this split and it will save her an absolute bag of money.

    Or as hewhoisnotintheknow say's you could try flying, either to Southhampton or Bristol

    Am I missing something here - why don't they just fly to Bristol ?
