Buying a moped/insurance...any advice?
Options
Hi all,
I am thinking about buying a moped to commute to work. It is about 12/13 miles, and about 4 miles of it is a 3 lane dual carriage way up to speeds of 50/60.
I am definitely going to get a 125cc as the ones that only go 30mph can be dangerous.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew what to expect insurance wise. I am 26, been driving 9 years...no points, all clean. I have insurance on a car, 3 years no claims. This only costs me £24 a month in insurance, so I'm going to keep it as it doesn't cost me much to run.
I'm not sure where to look for insurance for a moped?
Does anyone else have any other advice related to using oen for commuting?
Just recently I started going to work on a cycle (in London!) and didn't find it at all scarey so this shouldn't faze me too much!
Thanks

I had my 1st years insurance with lexham, i think they specialise in 125cc and under. I had free TP insurance from yamaha and it wwas £250 to upgrade to TPFT. I did not have a driving license, only CBT and was 19. HTH.
1 yr later I have restricted license, 1 yr no claims and full comp insurance with devitt was £400.Kavanne

If it goes above 30mph, it's a motorcycle!
as is anything over 49cc"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
my ds was with Rampdale insurance & they were fantastic- he had a moped as was only 16 and they were by far the best price- did try ebike but they were priced a little higher but they did give a years free legal cover even though I didn't take out the policy- sent an e-mail with all the details a few days after getting the quote.
although ebike, devitt & bennetts are all on quidco ranging from £20-£40 so may be worth getting a quote.Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the world together."
FEB challenge £128/£270 balance £142

This site's insurance section (click link at very top of page) has a specific article on motorcycle insurance.
No point recommending a specific one on price as that will vary wildly based on your circumstances. However, Carole Nash offers an excellent Europe-wide breakdown service as standard - and they were my first insurer. eBike are also pretty good, with a UK-only breakdown service included, an based on my wife's car experience they have a reasonable claims service. Currently I'm with Bennetts as they were the cheapest and I don't need breakdown (have RAC through Tesco). Last year I was with Churchill. Before that BMW. Before that Devitts. All have been pretty good on price - my main selection criteria.
Whatever you do, consider extra training. It may save your life. I can highly recommend this video.

although you have good intentions with advanced riding - I wouldnt recommend advanced riding techniques to a novie rider.
If you are new to motorcycling you have to do a CBT anyway, but advanced techniques and learners don't mix as it is just enought o do the basics.
Also if you attempt your motorcycle test and start doing advanced stuff then most likely you will fail outright.
If you are looking at a 125 then there are decent scooters out there - but if you have a car licence and have been driving why not look at a geared bike? something like a Honda CG125 - or at least try to arrange your CBT on a geared bike. That way you have the skills to use gears which will give you more options should you decide on a different motorcycle later on.
Also for geared scooters could look at at Piaggio PX125 - but they can be a bit tricky to ride for a novice.
For insurance I would suggest looking at Motorcycle Direct too.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0
