Thinking of getting a new DVD player, but then thought, maybe I should get Blu-Ray.
Can anyone shed some light on what might be best and where I can get a good quality cheap DVD and/or Blu-Ray system?

may as well buy a combo blu/ray dvd player .. if u have a 1080p or HD TV0 -
All depends on whether you have a HD Tv (preferably 1080p) and the Budget if yes to both then get a Blu-ray player. If you have a HD Tv but not the budget then get a DVD player with up-scaling, if you havn't got a HD Tv don't get a Blu-ray player.Whoa! Remember the Blu Ray discs will cost you more to buy (hire I am not sure about) will you be willing to pay that extra?0

Seems pointless to me to buy a DVD player when Blu-Ray will become the de-facto standard over the next couple of years.
If you can afford it (and you have an HD telly) then I'd push the boat out. PS3 is a good Blu-Ray player, but you can buy a standalone jobby like the Sony BDP-S300 for about £150.
In my humble opinion, the BBC's Planet Earth series in Blu-Ray HD is truly awesome, and beats the hell out of the same series on DVD.0 -
lovefilm do Bluray as well as DVD
A PS3 for £300 is not a bad choice, or Currys Digital have a Samsung i0 -
Blu-Ray is still in the process of taking off so although undoubtedly the quality is great, the choice in movies is somewhat limited at the moment. The primary format for new film releases is still DVD and I think it'll take a good while for that to change so don't be writing them off just yet.
Although I do have a Blu-Ray player in the form of a PS3, the majority of my movie watching is still done on DVD using a good quality 1080p upscaling DVD player to get the best picture on my LCD television. I'm afraid I'm a Sony bunny so my recommendations for players are:

and
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dvd-recorder/rdr-hxd890
The former being just an upscaling DVD player that you should be able to pick of for under 50 notes and the latter being an upscaling DVD/HDD player/writer which is pretty awesome but quite expensive.
I'm a techie kind of guy so I can notice the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD but I will say this: I certainly don't feel cheated watching an upscaled DVD and my wife doesn't see that much of a difference between them at all.0 -
Try richersounds they have blu-ray from £139Nothing to see here, move along.0

If you can hang on until next year, I think you'll find that the post-xmas hangover in retail combined with the credit crunch will see prices plummet.0

Thats what I'm hoping 4, and if Freesat HD boxes go sub £100 then I'll get one of them 2.:rotfl:Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -
