If you are talking about this years seedlings fruiting next summer then I can only say that mine have always fruited ok in their first summer...I don't think you can buy strawberry plants at this time of year anyway...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I grew strawberry plants from seeds this year and I did get an amazing crop of berries - small but lots of them - so you may be lucky!0

Thanks for the replys
have got 12 very young week plants so really happy 12/12 seeds took. Early glass production!
Brilliant if I do get fruit, would rather spend £2 on seeds rather that £s on plants but sometimes it better the devil u no0 -
I planted 2 sorts of strawbs from seed this year. One set struggled on and then carked it without ever getting past having about 4 leaves and the others eventually flourished.
I'd kindof resigned myself to no fruit this year as they took SOOO long to get going but lo and behold from about late Sept (and I'm in Yorkshire) they started bearing fruit! Yey! And it tastes nice - tiny alpine strawbs
I'm now more confident a) they will survive the winter and b) bear fruit next year.
My mother says these ones are a pest, but I don't care, picking a few strawbs every now and again has made my year! One day everything I earn will be mine and not the banks... ::rotfl:0 -
You can buy strawberry plants now, infact most places have only just started to dispatch them. They can be planted now and will give you a crop next summer.
I believe seedling grown in say spring are unlikely to crop in the summer of their first year but seedlings grown in say Autumn should grow the following summer.
You that made sense.Kind Regards

A very good chance.
I'm sure that they need a bit of frost or at least cold weather to promote growth or fruit.
I'm also going to grow some from seed but was going to start them off in Jan but might chance my luck and start them now. 'Sarian' from T&M.
I would think you should get a crop next summer. I believe the proffessional advice is to pick the leaves of in the first year to make the plant stronger and thus getting a bigger and better crop in the second year.
We are all growing them for our selves so I would pick the strawberries.
I am also thinking about growing them in hanging baskets inside my polytunnel, keep them away from slugs and from birds and get an earlier harvest and i came accross these. Plus if grown in my back garden then the chicken won't reach them.

As i've never grown the trailing type so can anyone tell me - do they send off runners?Kind Regards
