A slightly different point, but have you considered going to independent restaurants, rather than branches of a large American corporation which is contributing to our identikit high streets and killing off variety and local enterprise? You can do more with your money than just decide whether or not to tip :xmassmile

I do realise that, we do go to other independent places in town, as well as Starbucks.

The restauranteurs are conspicuous by their silence.

Wouldn't it be nice if the staff were paid a suitable wage in the first place, leaving the option of tipping open for excellent service, rather than forcing your customers to pay the shortfall.

Because then the headline prices would go up.

Just read the thread I started complaining about "free" flights from Ryanair. People just couldn't grasp the obvious point that these are never free, so shouldn't be advertised as such. People look at the menu and see the prices; they only think about the service charge later. If a service charge is included, they will be less likely to buy. It's the same psychology as selling everything with 99p at the end. Until all restaurants are forced to include a service charge, why would the few put themselves at a disadvantage by acting alone?

PS I am not a restauranteur!
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.

If you followed that logic through then we would pay less for goods in , for instance, supermarkets, and tip the staff on the way out.

I know that hairdressers and waiting staff are on appalling wages, but you cannot guarantee that money you leave will go to them, especially if the gratuity is added to a credit or debit card payment.

I used to work in the place where the owner considered that all tips were his property. We weren't apllowed to drink on duty, but as there was a bar sometimes customers would offer to buy us a drink; we had to take the money and say that we'd have it after work, and put the cash in the bosses tips jar.

I would rather be able to assume that the staff are adequately paid then have to worry about the best way to supplement their income.
  • It annoys me how sneakily these restuarants work full stop. They give you a written bill with the service charge added then proceed to give you the bluetooth credit card gizmo with a big "Gratuity?" on the screen.

It's happening way too often now. Instead of feeling embarrassed and paying, turn the tables (ho ho) and ask the waiter/waitress if they're embarrassed by trying to get two tips!

Golden Dragon in China Town, every time I go there and pay by card they say "would you like to add a tip sir" even though 10% is already added to the bill and every time I say "But I thought you already included this on the bill". They come back with all sorts of rubbish like the 10% is shared between everyone.
Do take care as a lot of places add 10% and still go on to offer you the chance to add more!

unfortunately, like supermarkets, the quality would suffer....alot of food in cheap supermarkets is awful and tasteless

  • I welcome reviews and advice on my website about service and tips.

I find most restaurateurs have their head in the sand, and a lot of diners don't feel they have a chance to have their say.

I won't post a link, but feel free to google 'local restaurant' and post your views. The site doesn't make me a living, but I feel that restaurants need to sort out their own house. Too often they will add a service charge, but will not make this clear when paying the bill.

Regards to Martin, his current programme is excellent.

  • All in Lincoln, that City that time forgot, near Nottingham!

Bad ServiceA few years ago, went out for new years eve meal to a restaurant that has unfortunately closed since, but they added 10%, at customers discretion, tip to the bill, wasn't out of this world meal or service, so was annoyed at the adding of to the bill, when questioned, the manager got shirty and called me tight, saying that this helped the staffs wages! What a cheek, never payed it and commented on his poor pay tactics, unfortunately some time later, they refused entry to a guide dog, and subsequently closed....shame.

Good Service Crust Restaurant - Excellent food, service, atmosphere, a small chef owned restaurant, who actually cooks the food himself and presents it to you, you have to wait a little, but then you aren't getting a microwaved meal, proper cooked food that takes time, well worth the wait, no stupid service charges, etc, etc, naturally we tip well, as it reflects the excellent service/food/attention that you get, treated as an individual! :xmastree:
  • Some of the best service was in the US, excellent service whereever we went for food, but the system of tipping there drives the employee to give good service, but not in a false way that some of the big chains here promote.
