Hi there
Looking for a new laptop and am not very technical
It needs to be fairly fast, I have a 8 meg link.
I mainly use the internet, eMail. edit photos, download & watch movies & sync my iPod.
I would like widescreen, needs to be wireless and a possibility to link to TV would be great
I would be happy to add extra memory if req
Any good suggestions, reconditioned would be considered.
My Acer has been great for 3 years but the power pin has been replaced twice and now starting to go again so I am wary of this brand unless improved
Thanks

Hi
Have a look at the laptopsdirect website;
www.laptopsdirect.co.uk
On the home page s there are two that are attractive
(1) The Samsung r60 plus is a good machine and I know as I have one myself. It will do all you want and looks very good. It got very good reviews when it came out and is good for the money.
(2) The other machine that is attractive is the Acer aspire 4920 with a very good spec and a slightly smaller screen.
Both machines (and all new laptops) come with vista which I do not like. There have been stories that with the Samsung it is prone to crashes. There is however a restore disk inbuilt into the Samsung. I am not recommending you buy from laptops direct, simply using it to show the machines. The acer machine is attractive and has won plaudits. Both machines have been out for a while which is why they are discounted and why they represent good value for money. But I note you are now are wary of Acer
Hope this helps0 -
Buy a Dell,
You can find the latest deals here https://www.dmxdimension.comThat gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I disagree, don't buy a dell! Have had 3 or 4 dell laptops over the last couple of years between me and my family, and most go wrong. I have always been a Dell fanboy and have only ever bought their desktops over other brands, but their laptops just don't seem to cut it with the rest.0

Wrong how? The 2 ive had dealings with have been fine upto now:idea:0 -
Hard drives randomly stop working resulting in dell having to replace, machine stops booting, screen goes blank requiring reboot, wireless card choosing when it wants to locate my network etc. I just don't find them reliable. I may have been unlucky, but I wouldn't make a recommendation. It was on my recommendation that my friends and family have bought dell laptops, and now I feel bad because they are always going wrong.0

oops
How old are they? I wouldnt have recommended them myself until the new models came out last year:idea:0 -
Very true, thinking about it. The last one I bought has been faultless, and that is a year old, and is a vostro laptop. The other ones must be in the region of 2-3 years old now, so maybe things have changed. I actually use a Dell laptop for work and other than being slow, nothing has actually gone wrong with it, but it was hugely expensive for laptops nowadays (>£1000).0

My old Dell D610 work laptop has been all over the place with me since I got it in Jan 2006. Still looks and works like new, couldn't fault it.
I have heard some horror stories about older Dell models (warped motherboards, fried power supplies etc), but I think they've got their act together and the newer machines are of a high standard.
I'm going to get a new laptop soon and I think it'll be a Dell or a Sony.0 -
I think I have been scarred by my experience with Dell, and from that point I would rather give my business elsewhere. I would get a Sony if you can afford it (mainly because they look nice), and they always get good reviews.0

Personally I've had two Dell Latitudes in the past 5-6 years, both very reliable, however latitudes are better built, more resilient and they guarantee to provide parts for many years longer than the cheaper inspiron range, but the 1525 are great laptops, and get rave reviews everywhere.
For a PC laptop Dell would be one of my first choices. Although I'd personally opt for an Apple MacBook Pro at the moment!
For clients I've purchased hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of Dell laptops and desktops, with very few issues at all.0
