Visiting Krakow and Auschwitz soon, any tips?

Hi
I'm off to Krakow and Auschwitz soon for a couple of days.
Anyone done this trip?

Any tips of what to do/see and where to eat?
Thanks

  • I have done this trip, you can get a bus from the bus station which is near to the train station in Krakow to Auschwitz. Also went to the salt mines while in Krakow, we got a bus there as well from near our hotel, the salt mine was a bit of a walk from the bus station tho and u have to go on a guided tour round the mine.

Hi, I'd deffo recommend going to the Salt Mines too, and the Castle - try booking an English speaking tour guide to get the most out of it. A horse-drawn carriage ride around the city is great fun, and allow a day for Auschwitz - easy travel by bus.
  • Been twice to Krakow in the last 12 months so, as you will appreciate, I like it there! Have a look on TripAdvisor where you will find a wealth of information on recommended hotels, restaurants and bars. The bars are amazing, mostly in large vaulted cellars.

Went to Auschwitz both visits - each time on the bus from the bus station - much cheaper than an organised trip. You can chose when you get there whether to wander around alone (but buy a guide book) or join an English speaking group. There is also a free shuttle bus to visit the camp at Birkenau.
Get the earliest bus you can as you will need the biggest part of a day there and the bus journey takes up to one and a half hours.

You can also get to the Salt Mine by local bus. It departs from the main Post Office.

If you go on the tram system be certain you have a ticket valid for the trip as apparently the inspectors are pretty tough! We found it easier to buy a 3 day ticket from one of the booths at various points along the tram line.

It's a beautiful compact city, enoy!

I'd recommend a guide at Auschwitz - there's lots to see. Are you travelling in a small group? I went with a group of friends - 8 altogether - and we hired a minibus & driver for the day. He then found a guide for us at Auschwitz, waited around all day and brought us home. Salt mines were brilliant - cold though!
