Troublefree removal of Norton antivirus and firewall

Hi everyone,
my partners computer always seems so slow - particularly at start-up when it takes an age before you can do anything. Norton is not only running in the background but he does regular scans too - I'm sure he's not infected with a virus. He also runs spybot regularly and we've used ccleaner to see if that would help.

On my lap-top I'm using free editions of AVG and Zone Alarm without problems, (and have for 2 years). Although it has the same processor speed as his, mine zips along happily! His computer is less than a year old.

I think that removing Norton will make a big difference - so do you have any tips on how to ensure we remove all unnecessary folders and files and have a trouble free change over? We'll create a system restore before we begin.

Thanks in advance.

  • On Ccleaner, have you gone into 'tools', 'startup' and had a look in there? If it is slow to startup, it is probably trying to load lots of things into the systray. Create a restore point before you start deleting things and you should be fine :)

I agree - but his company wanted it installed, and now they've 'gifted' him the computer so he can do what he likes with it :j .

Just get rid of Norton and go with AVG!

Norton is so processor intensive that it makes everything far too slow. AVG rocks!!!

Press Cntrl and Print Screen buttons at the same time, then open up mspaint, or any other graphics package and then click paste. you should then be able to save the image.

Alternatively, instead of all this, just create a new account on the computer for your OH to use instead of the current one. Copy any files he needs over to the new account, and it should load up a lot quicker.

As long as it is set up correctly, Norton can run just fine, and never be a problem.

I agree it is not the best out there, but it is not as bad as everyone tries to make out. :rudolf:
