Insulation in a house with no attick???

Options
Me,my partner and my 17 month old have just moved to a end terrace kind of house. The upstairs is actually the attick with dorma windows so we cant have loft insulation can we?? its double glazed but the house just dousnt seem to get warm, even with heating on full blast! And with washing to dry on rads its even colder some times. Thought i was doing really well untill last few days its turned so icy cold i had it on all day the last 2 days! Can I please have some advise on how to keep the heat in and my gas bills down???????, Thanks!!

I have no attick either but I do have an attic :)
Do you know the last time the boiler was serviced?
Do the radiators get hot (as opposed to warm)?
If it has not been serviced for many years it won't be able to heat the radiators very efficiently? Also is there air in the radiators stopping them filling with water? - They might need bleeding. Is the boiler set to its highest setting?

I know when I had my boiler serviced it was a lot easier to heat the house (the heat exchanged was caked in soot). Dunno how much it costs though cos by brother
did it (he's a gas service engineer).

What about the walls? Have they been insulated? Are there any draughts you can block?
You could put up plasterboard around the walls/roof with insulation behind it but you lose some of the room.
Can you dry outside? It might make a difference.

You say the attic is actually your upstairs. The important thing is the level of insultation under the roof which is were you need to stop the heat escaping from. If you go outside on a cold morning look at all the roofs along the road. If some or all have ice on them and yours doesn't then you have poor insulation in that area. Unfortunately until an attic were you can just go up there and add more insulation in your case you would need to either take down the ceiling to increase the insulation or you may be able to add another layer of plasterboard of a type is designed to reduve heat loss.
