How to sort out Income support

Ok, I have been on IS since 2003. On 22nd Sept 2008, I became a full time student, I informed IS about no longer claiming. About a week later, i received a letter comfirming as of the 29/07/2008 ( yep thats right not a typo) my claim had been cancelled.
I called up to quey this as I clearly had still been in receipt of IS until 22nd Sept, my bank statments showed this. I was told it was an error and not to worry.
Anyways, fast forward to a week or so ago, I have applied to continue to claim H/B as per advice from student finance, I got a letter stating that IS had informed HB that I stopped claiming IS on the 29/07/08 and could i provide evidence on how I had supported myself between 29/07 and 22/09 when I became a student.
So I went in showed them my statements and said the date IS gave is an error and why would I end my IS 2 months before I needed.
So basically, now IS are saying I have been overpaid between 29/07 and 22/09 and I have to repay it.
Sorry for the long post, please bare with me.
Basically, how can they do this, ? I did not end my claim on 29/07 I had no reason to, they did not end my claim my statements show this.
How can I get round this?

Hi Sally that sounds a nightmare what if you rang Is and explained the problem this is causing you, or possibly make an appt with CAB they have admitted it is their error.
Someone more knowledgable will be along shortly who will be able to advise you.
