Gas Fire Problems

Hiya everyone, just wondered if someone can offer me some advice.
I've got a gas fire in my living room, and with it being rather nippy, thought it'd be nice to whack the fire on for a bit.
Anyway, turned the knob to the ignition, and then pressed the ignition button to get the spark, which in turn starts the fire. So here is problem number one, no matter how many times I press the ignition button, and how many times its sparks, it won't light the pilot light
So you can get round that by lighting a match and holding it near the pilot light, whilst the ignition knob is pressed in.
So the ignition light is lit, you then turn the knob to get the fire going properly. And the pilot light just goes out
Tried it numerous times, even leaving the pilot light on for a good few minutes, in case its just needs to get some gas pumped into it or something along those non-technical lines
Anyone got a clue what could be up with it? And possible solutions to it?

Thermocouple or gas valve problem, or maybe it just needs a service.0
