Getting Rid of Steel/Metal Water Tank in Loft...(HOW TO?)

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and this is my first ever post. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

What is the best way of getting rid of that big old metal water tank? Bearing in mind thats its to big to fit through the loft hatch.

I am currently in the middle of boarding out my loft using T&G panels from B&Q, i am half way through but the thank is getting in the way and its annoying me. Theres no need for it to be there and its making the room look awful.

I have been told that i can grind it, is this not dangerous?

Any suggestions is welcome

Thanks

Terry

reckon grinding is too dangerous in the loft. use a jigsaw instead. get the correct blades.
measure and cut carefully to make the biggest pieces possible to fit the hatch. take sensible fire precautions too.
best to have a mate handy, just in case.
    Get some gorm.

I would go with the angle grinder

WITH some precautions , perhaps a damp blanket for the sparks??

    ALSO some ear defenders

I used a jigsaw on ours. It may take a while though as the blade gets hot so and you may go through a few blades. I went through 2 for two tanks I had to split one into 4.

aye, wear some ear defenders, it will make hell of a racket.
may be as well to buy next door some, too!
    Get some gorm.
  • Thanks for that guys...

...i am currently using a cheap jigsaw (£14.99 from Argos) for the loft boards it came with some blades one of which is a metal one so ill give that a go over the weekend.

I hope the vibration wont cause no problems? The tank is right near a gallow bracket where the top of the chimney is supported as the chimney was knocked out before i moved in...

When we did our loft, we put in uprights and made cupboards - the water tank went into a far corner behind the cupboard doors and was never seen again :p

Please let us know how you got on.

If the tank is that heavy, thinking you are going to have a tough time.

I don't fancy your chances with a jigsaw.

If it were me, I would use an angle grinder holding the grinder inside the tank with the disc spinning in such a way to direct the sparks down into the tank. put a bit (5mm) of water in the bottom of the tank if you want. And watch out for the dust and smoke, wear a good mask.

Dont forget to wear some goggles.

I know it doesnt sound good for jigsaw but a B&D jigsaw did ours the only thing it slowed down for was when it met rivets.

It is very noisy I didnt use any protection although I did wear googles and stopped every minute to cool blade down. I even wiped blade with water and dried with a cloth. One tank was so big even half of it wouldnt fit through the hatch and it isnt a small hatch you can easily get through and I aint thin

I did hate the dust though I hate lofts with passion
