  • I'd also suggest you take a look around you local charity shop or second hand bookshop (or car boot sale!) and look for old copies of classic cook books, so as Thriftlady says Marguerite Patten also Mary Berry and Delia's complete cookery - these will have all sorts of classic and basic recipes that will be cheap and cheerful.

  • I've an old copy of Delia's Frugal Food which cost me £1.50 back in my student days. I was in a book shop yesterday and saw her new version but the price was £17.99:eek: Methinks she got the title wrong!

After spending too much money on books, I have learned to

Go to the library, copy the recipes out I like - usually 20% at the most
    Buy in second hand/charity shops
    Get recipes online

    Lovefoodhatewaste.com is a good site
One day I might be more organised...........

  • I have loads of cookery books, but now I usually find it quicker (unless I know where the recipie is that I am looking for) is just to google the dish and print it out. If the recipie works for me I keep it in a loose leaf folder. I now have quite a colection in there of favourites.

  • Thriftlady I think you must have the same cookery book collection as me ! Would also add any of Shirley Goode,s books to the list .I have a collection of wartime cookery books, lots of ideas for cheap meals in these. All bought from boot sales, charity shops and e bay but these are getting harder to come by at reasonable prices.

As its not been recommended yet - the "beyond baked beans" series written by Fiona Beckett is aimed at first time away from home university students. There are some really good cheap recipe ideas - and you need very little equipment to make them

Designed for students who are out most of the day - have a healthy appetite - negligable cooking skills and very little in the way of fancy gadgets.

Worth checking out by all those whose uni days are long gone - me included.
