Problem refilling Canon cartridges.

I have just bought some refilling kits for my Canon MP210.
I have refilled them but am having problems. The printer isn't printing (very faint an poor qulaity). also, the ink is still showing as empty. I've run all the maintenance checks, nozzle cleaning etc.
I have read that I should get an on screen message, I have'nt had one.
I fear I've wasted my money but the cost of a new printer is less than new cartridges
Can anyone help please?
