As far as I am aware once you have paid for your licence in full you can cancel the DD. So you can effectively pay for your licence over 6 months (in arrears), cancel the DD and when your licence is due for renewal you can restart paying for it by DD over 6 months again.

One word of warning about the easy payment scheme - if you apply to join it before your licence runs out, the payment schedule begins 2 weeks after you've joined, regardless of whether this is before your old licence runs out. Having said that though the nice lady I spoke to agreed to alter my payment schedule so that it started when my licence run out.
